Bible Verses About Love and patience

There are two words for patience in the Greek. One is the word hypomonē, which means to have endurance and consistency. It implies a capacity to keep going in spite of the circumstances that may be encountered. A famous example of the use of this word occurs in the parable of the sower, where Jesus states:-

“And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s word, cling to it, and patiently (“hypomonē”) produce a huge harvest”. Luke 8:15 (NLT)

The second word for patience in the New Testament Greek is “makrothymia”, which means forbearance. The word literally means long (“makro”) temper (“thymia”) and implies self-restraint. Paul, when writing to the Galatian church, cites patience as one of the nine fruits of the Spirit. In the NIV translation, this word is rendered “forbearance”:-

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23, NIV)

Interestingly, Paul uses both “makrothymia” and “hypomonē” when writing to Timothy:-
“You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience (“makrothymia”) , my love, my steadfastness (“hypomonē”), my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra…” (2 Timothy 3:10-11, ESV)

The scriptures exhort us to practice patience in different ways.

Sometimes we will need to have patience as we wait on God and His timing for things in our lives. At other times patience will be important as we relate to one another and seek to live peacefully with each other. And through it all, the Lord is our ultimate role model in forbearance and long suffering.

There are times when we are simply called to wait on God:-

Psalm 37:7-8 (BBE)
Take your rest in the Lord, waiting quietly for him; do not be angry because of the man who does well in his evil ways, and gives effect to his bad designs. Put an end to your wrath and be no longer bitter; do not give way to angry feeling which is a cause of sin.

Psalm 40:1 (WEB)
I waited patiently for Yahweh. He turned to me, and heard my cry.

Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)
But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

James exhorts us to exercise patience in regard to Christ’s return:-
James 5:7-8 (CPDV)
Therefore, be patient, brothers, until the advent of the Lord. Consider that the farmer anticipates the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently, until he receives the early and the late rains. Therefore, you too should be patient and should strengthen your hearts. For the advent of the Lord draws near.

According to the scriptures, a patient character is something to aspire to:-

When we find ourselves in arguments, the bible exhorts us to be a calming influence:-

Proverbs 15:18 (BBE)
An angry man makes men come to blows, but he who is slow to get angry puts an end to fighting.

If we are suffering, then patience is something we shall need to exercise :-

Romans 12:12 (WEB)
...rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 (NIV)
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Finally, one of the hallmarks of God's character is patience:-

Psalm 86:15 (WEB)
But you, Lord, are a merciful and gracious God,
slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth.

Jesus is patient:-

Revelation 1:9 (ESV)
“I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance (hypomonē) that are in Jesus…"
